CJ-Ma is the first Hui lady we got to know through a Health-Screen project at the m*sque in her hometown six years ago. She has grown to be a dear friend as we spent time in each other’s homes and having meals together.
In the beginning, she did not seem to be interested in discussing spiritual matters. She was not spiritually thirsty and gave us the impression she was not a woman of peace. She would however, religiously stick to the forms and rituals of her M*slem faith. She is the only one amongst her two sisters who wears the M*slem headdress all the time. When she is at our home and it was time for the M*slem prayers, she would ask permission to go to one of our rooms to do her prayers.
Through the years of building a friendship with her, we learnt many precious lessons. We learnt anew to persevere with an eternal perspective, and to continue to sow deep into her life.
Each time we met, we would be very intentional in sharing about Jesus with her. It was discouraging when she showed no interest in knowing more. Yet, we learnt that our Lord never stops moving behind the scenes and He is certainly not slow in responding to our prayers (2 Peter 3:9). His timing is perfect! Yes, after over five years of having first met her!
We learnt also to see her and others like her, with the Lord’s eyes of compassion—not just potential evangelistic contacts or projects, but men and women, young and old, who are so very, very lost without Jesus.
One afternoon, God prompted us to share the gospel message with her in a graphical form. This time she listened intently, as we saw God taking hold of her heart and spirit. When we invited her to follow Jesus at the end of the sharing, she responded with a clear “Yes!”
Rejoice with us as we celebrate with great joy, this Hui lady, in her late sixties, opening her heart to Jesus! Pray for her growth as a follower of Jesus, as we spend time to follow her up.
