Favor From On High!

The local Chinese workers we are mentoring continue to press on with the work of enlarging their contact base and deepening their relationships with the Hui Moslem friends they have made. God has granted them much favor with the Hui community where they serve.

“C” is a Han Chinese worker we are mentoring to reach out to the Hui Moslems. He has started a kindergarten and an after-school center strategically located right in the middle of a Hui community that is notorious for drug-related crimes. Mothers single-handedly raise many of the kids who attend classes at the Centre — the husbands and fathers are in prison, serving jail time with life imprisonment, or have been put to death for peddling drugs.

C’s team members make regular home visits to help the families and pray for them. The Hui Moslems welcome them, saying C and his co-workers are unlike the Imams (religious teachers/leaders) who expect payment for prayer. More importantly, the Hui Moslems have witnessed first-hand answered prayers for healing!

“Z”, another Han Chinese worker, was able to lease a plot of land from a group of Hui families. It is unheard of in the county-city that Z is in for the Hui to lease land to a Han Chinese. And a Hui grandma that they have gotten to know has allowed them use of her courtyard to rear chickens. This is indeed God’s extraordinary favor, considering that the Hui often look upon the Han Chinese as outsiders. Z has also learned to rear bees from a Hui, and his wife makes bread in a Hui shop to make a living.

They have planted cherry trees in the plot of land and are expecting a harvest next year. May the cherry fruit they expect next year be translated into spiritual fruit they would see in their outreach to the Hui.

In the midst of open doors into the Hui community, these local Chinese workers continue to face the huge challenge of persecution from governing authorities where enforcement has been stepped up further to curb the work of the ministry.

May these workers experience God’s protection, and stay encouraged to see breakthroughs and much fruit for their faithful labor.

Changing Hearts

CJ-Ma is the first Hui lady we got to know through a Health-Screen project at the m*sque in her hometown six years ago. She has grown to be a dear friend as we spent time in each other’s homes and having meals together.

In the beginning, she did not seem to be interested in discussing spiritual matters. She was not spiritually thirsty and gave us the impression she was not a woman of peace. She would however, religiously stick to the forms and rituals of her M*slem faith. She is the only one amongst her two sisters who wears the M*slem headdress all the time. When she is at our home and it was time for the M*slem prayers, she would ask permission to go to one of our rooms to do her prayers.

Through the years of building a friendship with her, we learnt many precious lessons. We learnt anew to persevere with an eternal perspective, and to continue to sow deep into her life.

Each time we met, we would be very intentional in sharing about Jesus with her. It was discouraging when she showed no interest in knowing more. Yet, we learnt that our Lord never stops moving behind the scenes and He is certainly not slow in responding to our prayers (2 Peter 3:9). His timing is perfect! Yes, after over five years of having first met her!

We learnt also to see her and others like her, with the Lord’s eyes of compassion—not just potential evangelistic contacts or projects, but men and women, young and old, who are so very, very lost without Jesus.

One afternoon, God prompted us to share the gospel message with her in a graphical form. This time she listened intently, as we saw God taking hold of her heart and spirit. When we invited her to follow Jesus at the end of the sharing, she responded with a clear “Yes!”

Rejoice with us as we celebrate with great joy, this Hui lady, in her late sixties, opening her heart to Jesus! Pray for her growth as a follower of Jesus, as we spend time to follow her up.

Life Here Is Exciting!

In East Asia where Christ-followers can be thrown into jail for sharing their faith, we are very much encouraged and inspired by how God is using the local workers there in very special ways.

Caleb is a local worker we are mentoring to reach out to the Hui Moslems. He started an Education Centre that is strategically located right in the middle of a Hui community-area that is notorious for drug-related crimes.

Many of the kids who attend classes at the Centre are raised single-handedly by their Moms. So where are their fathers? Many are in prison serving life-imprisonment, or are already as it is the death penalty for those caught peddling drugs.

Caleb and his team makes regular home visits to help the families and pray for them. The Hui Moslems welcome them for they tell Caleb, he and his people are unlike the Imams (religious teachers/leaders) who expect and even demand cash payment for prayer. More importantly, the Hui Moslems have witnessed first-hand, answers to prayers for healing!

His team also visited the Imams at their homes. Caleb was praying for an Imam who started to tear when the Holy Spirit touched him. Please pray that such a supernatural touch would eventually lead to a deep heart transformation!

It broke our hearts to learn that a Hui Moslems Caleb was reaching out to, was forcibly arrested by the police right after he had made the decision to give up pushing drugs. We now have no news of him at all.

Please uphold Caleb and his team as they faithfully bring Jesus’ love and light into the dark alleys of this community. May they win the fierce battle for hearts and lives here as they reach out to the families of the children and youth. May they themselves also be protected as the authorities has designated the area they live and minister in as very unsafe to be hanging around in.
